Resistors in Parallel


Example 1

In the circuit shown in example 1 we have a Network of resistors and a battery. First we have
to simplify the circuit,using an Ohms law formula for series resistors,ie Rt = R1+ R2 Etc.
This we can do and the result is shown in example 2


Example 2

Now we have 2 resistors in parallel.(Their left and right hand ends are joined to the battery.)
To calculate the total resistance now we use the following. 1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 +1/R3 Etc.
Therefor 1/Rt = 1/24 + 1/24 ie 1/12 cross multiply to get Rt so Rt = 12 Ohms. See example 3.


Example 3.

If we wanted to know the current in the circuit we will say. I = V/R. V = 12 volts R = 12 Ohms
therefor I = 1 Amp.
